Roundtable: To the Point -
Conducting Research for a Better Theatre Landscape Publicly available for a limited time on our YouTube For 24 hours on June 22nd at noon Last month, we recorded a conversation between (DG) Director of Programming at Directors Gathering, Brey Ann Barrett, and Director of Programming, Partnerships, and Resources at Parent Artist Advocacy League (PAAL), Rachel Junqueira Spencer Hewitt. |
About the conversation
In this thoughtful and invigorating conversation, Brey and Rachel, identify several of the challenges within the theatrical landscape and the importance of research and data to advocate for sustainable change. As with various topics that (DG) has presented over the past several years, this conversation focuses on the human needs of artists and the practical ways to challenge the current norms.
With their Survey of Care, PAAL has gathered a vast amount of data from theatrical practitioners across different fields. They are looking to gather data from both those who identify as caregivers and those who do not. You can still fill out the survey by clicking here, as they are evaluating the data from the first round, which amounted to about 500 completed surveys.

Skill-Share for Socially-Distant Theatre
With Blayze Teicher and Tamara Della Anderson
September 2020 We would like this gathering to be as focused on learning from one another as it is on hearing from our moderators. To that end, we are asking that each participant come prepared with one question about creating socially-distant or digital theatre, and one skill, tool, or resource that you've found helpful in creating or thinking about this work. This could include an example of socially-distant theatre that you found inspiring, a piece of technology you've found useful, a method for working with collaborators across distance, etc. |
The Director-Educator in a Virtual WorldWith Elena Araoz + Carrie Klewin Lawrence
Spring 2020 Educators of all kinds are now being asked to adapt their teaching practices to accommodate social distancing amidst the spread of coronavirus. For theatre educators and directors, this time poses particular challenges: How do we create live theatre experiences when we can't physically gather together? How do we teach directing when we can't be in a shared rehearsal room? How do we think about the future of live theatre in a digital age? |
Vision a Play
With Nicole Miller Marks & Christine Freije
Spring and Summer 2020 Gather with (DG) for our next (DG) Digital Gathering, "Vision a Play" on (DG)'s Zoom platform. Flex your skills for offering your directorial voice and witness fellow directors' approaches to a script. (DG) Board Member + Director Member, Nicole Miller Marks, and (DG) Interim Producer, Christine Freije, will moderate. We invite you to read a play, provided by (DG), and share your vision for staging a future production of the work. |
A Grad School Conversation
With Jerrell L. Henderson + Shamus Hunter McCarty
Spring 2020 Applying to graduate schools for directing can stir up tons of questions and challenges. When is the right time? What schools should I apply to? What do I hope to get out of the experience? What does the decision to apply to graduate school mean in the midst of a global pandemic and a sudden wave of digital learning? |
